Below is a Glossary of some of the systems within Complementary Medicine in alphabetical order. It is impossible at this time to list all of the complementary therapies but we have listed some of the most common. We will be updating on a regular basis.

ACUPRESSURE
Using the Acupuncture points, pressure from the fingers is applied where appropriate.

ACUPUNCTURE
Fine needles are inserted into the body at meridians or energy centres. This ‘unlocks’ or regulates the CHI energy circulating the body, which in turn stimulates the healing process. There is a mass of Chinese research but Western science does not yet accept the principle.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE
Alexander F. M. (1896-1955) was an Australian actor who lost his voice. He realigned his posture and found the voice returned. The Technique is to persuade the body to return to its normal position and so allow the brain to recognise and retain the realignment. The head and neck positioning are particularly important.

AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy is the systematic use of essential oils in treatments to improve physical and emotional well being and have been used in healing for thousands of years. Each aromatic oil has a unique and therapeutic property, which can be utilised very effectively to improve health and prevent disease. Both of their physiological and psychological effects combine well to promote positive health and a state of equilibrium. Aromatherapy is well known for its use and effectiveness in stress related problems and chronic conditions.

AROMA HEALING
Aroma Healing was first introduced in the 1970's by: Miss J Bailey of the Isle of Wight School of Aromatherapy and Reflexology. IWSAR. The natural plant oils are used for their powerful physiological effects through inhalation, bathing and when used in other therapies, such as Colour Healing, Spiritual Healing, Reiki etc. Aroma Healing is well known for its effectiveness in stress-related problems.

AYURVEDA
Ancient Indian system of medicine of preventative medicine and treatments which includes diet, yoga and meditation.

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES
These formulae were developed by Dr Bach as an offshoot of Homoeopathic medicine. The usefulness of this lies in the way the remedies can be effective treatment of mood swings and emotional conditions. The remedy for shock and other upsets is considered particularly helpful.

BIO-ENERGY THERAPY
This is another form of Natural Healing. Practitioners by channelling energy though their hands identify where the energy is flowing and where it may be blocked. They then work to release any blockages and restore flow to the bio-energy field. This allows the body to kick start itself back to health.

BOWAN THERAPEUTIC TOUCH
This is another form of Natural Healing. The practitioner again channelling energy through their hands, use touch in certain sequences to release energy blockages.

CHIROPRACTIC
Manipulation of the spine and movement of the extremities attributed to D.D. Palmer about 1890. Chiropractors vary in their approach. Some give extended massage before treatment whilst others do not.

CHINESE MEDICINE
Has much in common with other Eastern systems and is the foundation of many techniques currently used in the West. Provides a comprehensive range of treatments for problems arising from imbalances at physical, mental, emotional and spiritual parts of the consciousness.

COLONIC HYDROTHERAPY
Warm water is pumped into the colon and the residues of faecal matter and other deposits can be cleared. The central point is that poisons and faecal matter are flushed out and replaced with beneficial bacteria. Best used in conjunction with nutritional advice.

COLOUR HEALING
This is another form of Natural Healing. The practitioner will detect the colours in the energy field Aura and Chakras of the individual. The relevant colours can be used through a variety of applied techniques, to bring the body back into balance. This is mostly practised by Spiritual Healers with the ability of extended perception either by sight or touch.

COLOUR THERAPY
The benefits of coloured light on the skin is well known and the colour practitioner will diagnose and provide the appropriate coloured light to help bring back health and well-being.
Colour can be used in the choice of clothing and furnishing since they affect the mood and attitude of mind.

CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY
This is another form of Natural Healing.. The practitioner combines healing intention with a knowledge of anatomy, using the hands to "listen" for restrictions or strains in the body. It is said to be developed by Dr William Sutherland in the 1930’s, but has in fact been with us for many years. The process relies on the practitioner’s channelling healing energies directly into the head and neck.

CRYSTAL HEALING
This is another form of Natural Healing. It is claimed that the practitioner uses crystals to tune the channelled energy to the bodies fluctuating vibrations. Crystals are chosen according to their energy and the needs of the patient.

ETHERIC CRYSTAL HEALING
This is another form of Natural Healing. It is claimed that the practitioner uses the visualisation of crystals (without using crystals) to channel energy to the bodies fluctuating vibrations. Crystals are visualised according to their energy and the needs of the patient. It is said that this allows the practitioner to use all of the crystals known to man. This again is mostly practised by Spiritual Healers with the ability of extended perception either by sight or touch.
